Dear Temple Sinai Family,

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Avital Ostfield is Temple Sinai’s new Director of Education, effective as of August 1, 2018.

We couldn’t have found a better match in an educator. Avital will help us achieve the goals that our community established during our self-evaluation and strategic planning for religious education this past spring. When describing her approach to education, Avital told us, “Working with students of all ages, watching them connect and grow as Jews has become my life’s work. I believe that instilling a strong Jewish identity can be accomplished in the right synagogue educational setting.”

Avital has most recently been Director of Education at Congregation B’nai Amoona, near St. Louis, Missouri, where she worked with about 200 students. She has also held a leadership position at Temple Beth Emeth, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She has experience teaching in Detroit public schools, and holds a Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan. Avital grew up in Minnesota, but was born in Israel and speaks fluent Hebrew.

Avital will lead our committee and administrative staff in implementing exciting changes for the 2018-2019 school year. These include a name change for our educational programming, which is now known as Chavurah@Sinai, loosely translating to “Friends at Sinai.” Special programming for grades 6-8 of Chavurah@Sinai will be known as Tribe678, a “program within a program” to engage students through B’nai Mitzvah and beyond.

Several “meet and greet” events with Avital are in the works, and her contact information will be forthcoming, so there will be plenty of opportunities for members, especially parents and kids, to get to know her. Please stay tuned for details!

Please note that registration for Chavurah@Sinai (formerly Religious School) and Hebrew school will open on Wednesday, August 15. More information and sign-up links to come!

Everyone is welcome to join us in developing Chavurah@Sinai and planning our community’s vibrant future. To get involved, please contact any of our current committee members:
