Our 8th and 9th graders were joined by students from Touro Synagogue, Gates of Prayer, Beth Israel in Jackson, MS and B’nai Zion in Shreveport, LA for a trip to Birmingham to learn about the Civil Rights Movement. This very special trip occurs every other year and takes our students to the 16th St. Baptist Church, The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center. Students heard from speakers who were part of the Civil Rights movement, as well as Riva Hirsch, an inspiring Holocaust survivor. The purpose of the trip is to not only teach our students the facts of the struggle for civil rights but also why it has always been and always will be a core Jewish value. The group enjoyed wonderful hospitality from Temple Beth El in Birmingham and also enjoyed a fun bowling and pizza party on Saturday night. See photos below:
