Warren Byrd and David Chevan are the cofounders of The Afro-Semitic Experience, a band that blends African American and Jewish musical traditions into something soulful and joyful, while simultaneously genre-defying. Their partnership started with a simple idea: what happens when you bring together spirituals, gospel, and Jewish liturgical music and use a jazz lens to interpret and meld those traditions? The answer turned out to be a rich, improvisational sound that’s full of heart and groove. Warren’s piano playing is steeped in gospel and jazz, with a ferociously intellectual and lyrical touch that lifts the music skyward. David’s bass lines ground everything with warmth and depth, and his arrangements give the band room to explore and connect.
